High Level Meeting on 17 June 2024

Botswana's new Head, Executive Secretary Molosiwa expressed concern about in situ leach mining affecting Botswana's water and revealed that the Stampriet Transboundary Aquifer System is larger than previously believed.

UNESCO specialists, Ms Amie Legget and Dr Malcolm Siegel, commented on the shortcomings of the Environmental Impact Assessment for Test Mining. They recommended further studies and modelling to understand the project and ensure that mining does not compromise groundwater quality.

The participants hold conflicting opinions. According to Timotheus Mufeti, the Environmental Commissioner, the Ministries will need to conduct additional internal and external reviews and gather more information before reaching a decision.
